Ian Eckhardt's blog ::WWE Friday Night Smackdown! 2/26/10
Live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on August 15th, WWE brings us this year's annual SummerSlam with high drama, but not as many matches as we're used to in a WWE pay per view event. If you missed it, or even if you saw, here's what went down. Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler v. Kofi Kingston (title match) Winner: No one. The match was interrupted by the Nexus. Dolph was, of course, accompanied to the ring by Vickie Guerrero but let's not forget that if she had not been at ringside at each of his matches and that is a large part of the reason he has his title right now. But an irate Kofi Kingston was not going away quietly after battling to get it when he was drafted to SmackDown and it was awarded and then taken away from him thanks to the dealings of Drew McIntyre. I don't like the fact that Vickie can stay at ringside to help Dolph Ziggler. I understand that she is the Official Consultant to SmackDown (whatever that means) but she is clearly misusing her power to bully everyone (remember when she was aligned with LayCool?). Despite how Ziggler won his spot at the SmackDown Money In the Bank Ladder Match and how he won the Intercontinental Championship, there is something about winning a title that gives a superstar a renewed sense of confidence and helps them keep the title. The same happened when Alicia Fox won the Divas Championship at Fatal 4 Way and has been able to retain the title. But she will be tested later tonight as she also defends her title against a recently returned Melina. Well, in the middle of the match, while Kofi was battling his way out of a sleeper hold, the Nexus came in to disrupt the match. Ziggler was able to get out of the ring, but they proceeded to attack Kingston with their signature wolfpack mentality. What is this accomplishing? Did they really have to interrupt a title match to show their "dominance?" Backstage United States Champion The Miz is holding is Money In the Bank briefcase while Chris Jericho and Edge (who is snacking on a Slim Jim) are begging him to join Team WWE. The Miz says he'll let them know. Divas Champion Alicia Fox v. Melina (title match) Winner: Melina, as predicted. Remember that Alicia is out to prove that her win of the title was no fluke, but Melina defeated Alicia Fox this past Monday night on Raw. Also remember that Melina never lost the Divas title, rather she vacated the title back in January due to a knee injury. At one point during the match Melina did appear to suffer a slight reinjury to her left knee. Alicia also made sure to capitalize on her shoulder after shoving it into the ring post. Now, as Josh Matthews is interviewing Melina, out come LayCool, the self-professed Women's co-Champions. LayCool has nothing but insults for her and Melina is not having that. LayCool is able to overpower Melina but I am sure that Melina will get her revenge. It's so weird because Melina is on the Raw roster and has nothing to do with what goes on with the Divas Championship. 3 on 1 Handicap Match: Big Show v. The Straight Edge Society (CM Punk, Luke Gallows, and Joey Mercury) Winner: Big Show, as predicted When the Big Show came out, his right hand was still bandaged after the broken bones and tendons inflicted on him courtesy of the SES. But before the match began, one of the medical officers removed the bandage to show the SES that his hand is fully healed. But will it be enough? After Big Show clears the ring, he ventures out to get one of them back in, but his right had was exposed again and that gave the SES the opportunity they needed to keep the Big Show grounded. Then after Punk gets dumped over the top rope, Serena escorts him away from the ring leaving Gallows and Mercury to bear the brunt of the Big Show's attack. Backstage Kane is vowing revenge in front of the casket on behalf of his brother, The Undertaker, when WWE Champion Sheamus shows up asking to borrow the casket to put Randy Orton in it after his match. Sheamus says that he is the real Big Red Monster and to stay out of his way, but Kane says that Sheamus' guts will be spilled over the floor if he ever interrupts him again. Before we get to the next match, out comes United States Champion The Miz to address the WWE Universe. So the question is will he won't he join Team WWE? He polls the crowd but he really doesn't care what they think since the talk in the locker room is that he is the missing link that will bring the team to victory. The Miz said John Cena is the only superstar who can see him; Bret Hart said he is the best there is, the best there has been, and the best there has ever been; Edge gave him a year's supply of Slim Jim; John Morrison admitted that he was really the Genetti and The Miz was Shawn Michaels, only better; R-Truth wrote him a crappy rap; and Chris Jericho gave him a copy of Fozzy's CD (which he claims he threw away). He even said that this whole thing was better than that spectacle that LeBron James put on ESPN but that the Lakers will still lose the NBA Championship next year. But he will join Team WWE and lead them to victory because he's The Miz and he's awesome. WWE Champion Sheamus v. Randy Orton (title match) Winner: Randy Orton, predicted, via disqualification. Sheamus claims that he is not afraid of Randy Orton, but it's clear from his actions over the past couple of weeks that Sheamus is fearful of Randy Orton and, if Orton wins, it may make The Miz think twice about cashing in his Money In the Bank contract tonight -- especially after declaring the he will join Team WWE (to fill the spot left open when the Nexus attacked The Great Khali last Monday). The bulk of this match is really about each superstar wearing down the other. The advantage goes back and forth between Sheamus and Randy Orton and we are seeing frustration from Sheamus as he has been unable to pin Randy Orton. When Sheamus realized that he could not easily beat Randy Orton, he left the ring to get a chair. The official tried to take the chair away from Sheamus but ended up being thrown out of the ring, resulting in the disqualification of Sheamus, but that means that Sheamus retains the WWE title. Realizing what has happened, Orton goes on a rampage and RKOs Sheamus onto the announcer table. Medical officers have arrived to help Sheamus who looks like he has no idea where he is. Commercial break for the new John Cena move "Legendary" which runs in limited theaters starting September 10th. World Champion Kane v. Rey Mysterio (title match) Winner: Kane Remember that although Rey Mysterio earned this spot by defeating Jack Swagger in a Number 1 Contender's match, Kane claimed that The Undertaker said that it was Rey Mysterio who attacked The Undertaker. However, a couple of weeks ago, Rey Mysterio accused Kane of attacking his own brother so that he could finally be World Champion. Kane has vowed to put Mysterio in a casket and keep the World Championship on "the dark side." Although I am disappointed that Rey Mysterio was not able win the title back from Kane, he put on a hard fought match. Now Kane is telling Mysterio that he will pay with eternal suffering as hell consumes his soul for what he did to The Undertaker. He tries to put Mysterio in the casket, but Mysterio fights back and suffers back to back choke slams and a tombstone pile driver. Now he drags Mysterio to the casket, opens it up and there is The Undertaker much to the surprise and shock of Kane! The Undertaker approaches Mysterio and asks if he has ever heard of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth? He asks Rey why he did it and Mysterio again denies it and he says he believes Mysterio. Undertaker picks him up and turns his attention to Kane. They both have each other set up for a choke slam and Kane puts The Undertaker in a tombstone pile driver. So it really was Kane the whole time and we will see how this will play out in the next few weeks on SmackDown. After all of that drama, here is your friendly reminder that this fall SmackDown will be moving to the Syfy network. 7 on 7 Tag Team Elimination Match: The Nexus v. Team WWE (John Cena, Edge, Chris Jericho, John Morrison, R-Truth, Bret "The Hitman" Hart, and United States Champion The Miz) Winners: Team WWE, as predicted! This is a very important match for team WWE as the Nexus has been raining destruction on Monday Night Raw and the summer Pay Per View events all summer. They have attacked everyone, including Mr. McMahon, who we have not seen since he was attacked, and Hall of Famer Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. The Nexus claims that they are united 100% behind a common purpose, but no one is really sure what this is and they have never said. Human psychology tells me that no team can be 100% all the time. Even if the Nexus manages to win tonight, it will only be a matter of time before cracks start to form in their group as well. If Team WWE hopes to win tonight, then they must get the upper hand in the numbers game tonight. And just as The Miz was about to enter the ring, John Cena tells him that he is too late. Their 7th member is actually Daniel Bryan, The Miz's rookie from NXT Season 1. And with that announcement, The Nexus seems very rattled by the addition of Daniel Bryan to Team WWE. As the match gets started, Daniel Bryan is able to force Darren Young into submission putting the numbers game advantage in the hands of Team WWE. John Morrison takes out Michael Tarver and Team WWE has the advantage 7-5. The Nexus is very shook up by this and had to regroup. Sheffield eliminates Morrison thanks to a distracted ref not seeing a kick to Morrison's head by Justin Gabriel. He goes on to pin R-Truth and now the numbers are even. Someone from the Nexus tossed a chair in the ring, Bret Hart used it and got him disqualified. Now it's 4-5 in favor of Nexus. Jericho does the code breaker on Sheffield, tags in Edge and uses the spear to even the numbers to 4-4. One thing the Nexus is really taking advantage of is attacking the legal man while the official's back is turned. Not very sportsmanlike, but nothing about the Nexus screams sportsmanlike conduct. And with the walls of Jericho, Otunga taps out giving the advantage to Team WWE 4-3. But that quickly, Slater eliminates Jericho and Edge (Edge after arguing with John Cena after the elimination of Jericho). After Edge is eliminated, he and Jericho assault John Cena leaving only him and Daniel Bryan to fight for Team WWE. At this point, the remaining members of Nexus have turned their attention to wearing down John Cena. He is finally able tag in Daniel Bryan and we'll see if that is helpful. And he is able to make Heath Slater tap out to even out the odds but out comes The Miz and hits Bryan from behind with the Money In the Bank briefcase and Daniel Bryan is eliminated. Now it is down to John Cena versus Justin Gabriel and Wade Barrett. It's not looking good for John Cena as Barrett and Gabriel remove the mats from around the ring. But John Cena is able to roll out of the way of Gabriel's 450 splash and pin him leaving him and Barrett. Barrett comes in and is able to put the STF on Wade Barrett and win the match for Team WWE. Thank you John Cena! Join me for the next WWE Pay Per View Event, the Night of Champions, on September 19th in Chicago, when every title will be on the line. Source: WWE SummerSlam 2010 |
